SHABBAT ACROSS AMERICA!!!
Purim is Coming!! Shalach Manot and Mitzvah!!
This year, Sisterhood and Social Action join forces for a new project. It is a true
mitzvah! We are going to be putting together Shalach Manot which will be
available for you to purchase for our congregants as well as non-congregants.
Shalach Manot (the sending of gifts) is an ancient tradition from the book of
Esther, when (it is written) the Jews of Shushan sent portions of food to each
other to celebrate their rescue from the wrath of Haman. Our Shalach Manot will
include Sisterhood’s luscious hamentaschen, a small bottle of Kedem, and other
goodies. This mitzvah will be set up in the same way as our New Year’s Cards,
however, reciprocation will not be available. Funds raised from this project will go
to help the synagogue. A portion will go to the Hebrew Free Loan Society of
Greater Philadelphia (they provide interest-free loans to Jewish families in need).
And, as we did last year, Social Action will be delivering Shalach Manot to some of
our senior congregants. If you wish to order Shalach Manot for non-congregants,
there will be space on the order form for this. You should be receiving your
packets in the mail any day now.
We hope you are as excited as we are about this wonderful project, and that
you will support it. What better way to tell your fellow congregants that you care?
Our long day of baking will be on Sunday, March 5, starting at 9 a.m. and
ending around 5 p.m. We will need many volunteers, so if you would like to bake
hamentaschen, assemble the Shalach Manot, and/or deliver them, please call me,
or email me at kbhorsinaround@comcast.net. No one will be turned away!!
