Sisterhood

Sisterhood is an organization directly linked to the synagogue. Its members are made up of Ohev Shalom women with a common goal: to enrich their Jewishness educationally, socially and religiously. We accomplish this by sponsoring activities that speak to the needs of ourselves, our families and our synagogue's members. Nearly every conservative synagogue nationwide supports a Sisterhood. We fall under the governing umbrella called Women's League of Conservative Judaism. A percentage of the dues collected goes to Women's League, in turn, they provide us with materials, ideas, and guidelines so that we can run a successful organization.

We're involved in a lot of fun activities. Just to whet your appetite, here are some things you can expect:

  • Mother/Daughter and Grandmother/Granddaughter activities
  • Outdoor activities
  • Educational events
  • Membership dinner
  • Trips
  • Book discussions
  • Guest Speakers

Your Sisterhood dues support the following activities:

  • Our beautiful and well-stocked Gift Shop
  • High Holiday baby-sitting
  • High Holiday refreshments
  • Sukkah Decorating Party
  • Sisterhood meeting programming Hanukkah Happening: a craft/gift-making emporium for the children
  • Family Living Brunch: with programming relating to current issues
  • Purim Carnival
  • Kitchen maintenance
  • Torah Fund Campaign:
  • Support for the Jewish Theological Seminary
  • Friday night Oneg refreshments throughout the year
  • Shabbat morning Kiddush refreshments throughout the year
  • $3,000 annually to support the Synagogue Library
  • $1,500 annually to support the Mispallelim School (Ohev's Hebrew School)
  • $1,500 annually to support the Youth Program (Ketanim, USY, Kadima)

You can see why it is so important to not only have your financial involvement, but your physical and creative energies as well.

Volunteerism is much needed and always appreciated. Simply helping in the kitchen to arrange High Holiday refreshments is a great way to get your feet wet and our Gift Shop can always use a hand. As we work together, we kibitz, share things about each other, and strengthen our Jewish identity. You may also choose to attend many of our functions without helping out. That's OK too! Whichever level of involvement you enjoy is fine...the goal is that you get involved in some way.

Now that you have a clear understanding of Sisterhood and the vital role it plays in our synagogue community, please join us as we embark upon another year of Jewish exploration together!
