Havurot GroupsWhat is a havurah?A Havurah is a group of 10-12 couples or families, or up to 20 individuals, who share common interests and who get together on a regular basis in members' homes to socialize, to study together, and to celebrate Jewish life. All members of the Havurah make a commitment to the group to meet regularly once a month. What is the advantage of a havurah? For new members, getting to know people in a larger congregation like ours can be intimidating. A Havurah is an excellent way to become acquainted with others who have similar interests. So many new members may be without family nearby—the Havurah often becomes an extended family with which one can share holidays, simchas and sorrows. For existing members, a Havurah is a way to create progamming you’d like to see. Those interested in studying, socializing and exploring Judaism can find other members with the same interests and begin creating what you’d like to see at Ohev. What does a havurah do?It's up to you! Your group can enjoy a Shabbat dinner together, have a Hanukkah party, build a Sukkah, even go camping if you're so inclined. Each Havurah determines the types of activities it wants...some involve children, some may not. You can ask Rabbi Robbins to attend your monthly meeting to discuss a variety of topics related to Jewish life. What havurot currently exist?Currently there are only three active Havurot at Ohev, but applications are being taken from new and existing members to form new groups. Current Havurah members have raved about the program. It gives families and individuals an opportunity to get connected. Already for some the Havurah has been like extended family. Celebrating holidays and simchas together and helping each other through difficult times. Successful Havurah events have included Hanukkah parties, making Purim baskets for the elderly, picnics and pool parties and even a murder mystery party. How do I join a havurah? After returning a completed Havurah application, you will be "matched up" with others who have similar interests, backgrounds and requests. The Havurah Chair attends first meeting of your new Havurah to help break the ice, to explain about how a Havurah functions, and to give programming ideas. If you have any questions about the program please feel free to call Karen Ernest at 610.328.6290. I look forward to sharing this wonderful program with you. |
